Calcutta Bamboo Poles & Gaffs

For centuries "Calcutta" Bamboo poles have been prized by people around the world for applications in which a long, strong, flexible, and buoyant pole is required.

Scientifically known as Dendrocalamus Strictus, or male bamboo, Calcutta bamboo poles are almost completely solid and thus extremely strong, yet at the same time maintaining the flexible nature that has made bamboo such a valuable commodity.

Today we at Orion Trading Co we import Calcutta bamboo poles and gaffs in lengths of 18', 20', 22', and 24' mainly for use in the nut harvesting industry.  The flexible bamboo poles are used during harvest to knock off stubborn nuts that did not fall off during the "shaking" process.  The bamboo poles are later used again just before winter to knock off any nuts that are stuck on the tree before dormancy, and which if left on the tree would become harbors for disease-carrying pests, specifically the navel orange worm.

Due to popular demand, we have also begun importing smaller-length poles for use as gaffs in the commercial and private fishing industry.

Once used as bamboo fishing gaffs and poles, Calcutta today is mostly prized as the perfect material for a gaff.  It is light, incredibly strong, resistant to rot from saltwater, and most importantly buoyant.
